Background of the Study
Code-switching, the practice of alternating between languages in conversation, has become a significant feature in multilingual communities, particularly within Hausa community meetings. In these settings, participants often alternate between Hausa and other languages to convey nuanced meanings, express identity, and accommodate diverse interlocutors (Abdullahi, 2023). This linguistic phenomenon is not random; rather, it follows systematic patterns that contribute to overall discourse coherence and communicative effectiveness. Scholars have highlighted that code-switching can facilitate smoother transitions, clarify ambiguous references, and enhance audience engagement (Sule, 2024). In Hausa community meetings, where diverse linguistic backgrounds converge, the ability to switch codes effectively is critical for maintaining mutual understanding and ensuring that all participants are included in the discussion. This study investigates the effects of code-switching on discourse coherence, examining how linguistic alternation impacts the clarity and fluidity of communication. By analyzing recorded interactions and participant feedback, the research aims to provide a detailed understanding of the pragmatic functions of code-switching and its role in fostering an inclusive dialogue within Hausa communities (Abdullahi, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Although code-switching is a well-documented phenomenon in multilingual contexts, its impact on discourse coherence in Hausa community meetings remains underexplored. The challenge lies in quantifying the extent to which code-switching aids or hinders clear communication among participants with varying language proficiencies (Sule, 2024). This gap in the literature raises questions about whether frequent switching disrupts the flow of conversation or enhances mutual understanding. Furthermore, there is limited empirical evidence on the pragmatic functions of code-switching within community settings, which complicates the development of effective communication strategies. This study seeks to address these issues by investigating the effects of code-switching on discourse coherence, thereby contributing to improved communication practices in multilingual community environments.
Objectives of the Study
To examine the patterns and frequency of code-switching in Hausa community meetings.
To evaluate the impact of code-switching on the coherence of discourse.
To propose recommendations for managing code-switching to enhance communication.
Research Questions
What are the prevalent patterns of code-switching in Hausa community meetings?
How does code-switching affect the coherence of discourse in these meetings?
What strategies can be adopted to optimize code-switching for clearer communication?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it elucidates the role of code-switching in enhancing or impeding discourse coherence within Hausa community meetings. The findings will contribute to a deeper understanding of multilingual communication practices and inform strategies to improve inclusivity and clarity in community interactions. The research offers valuable insights for community leaders, linguists, and educators seeking to harness the benefits of code-switching while mitigating its potential drawbacks (Abdullahi, 2023; Sule, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to an investigation of code-switching and its effects on discourse coherence in Hausa community meetings, excluding other multilingual contexts.
